Any kind of travel allows for the landscape you know to slowly fade into the distance, while something else comes into view. The residue of your daily life slowly melts away as you walk or sail or glide towards whatever is waiting for you.

When we got married, my husband and I decided we would go to the Maldives for our 10-year anniversary. Surely, in 10 years we could afford such adventure and extravagance. Fast forward 11 years and we have three kids, another on the way, and the many financial and social burdens of modern life. The Maldives still sit there on the horizon and that’s ok. It’s always nice to have a proverbial carrot to chase.

Also, this: proximity still offers adventure.

We pack the kids and the boards, the many hotdog buns and stuffed animals, onto my parents’ boat and follow swells in the summer.

A few fantastic sips of cold beer, sliding across the water on melted wax, the pale and shiny fish below'; sometimes that’s all it takes to feel far away.

THE DESTINATION IS THE DESTINATION
THE DESTINATION IS THE DESTINATION

Travel is all about getting somewhere else. The journey, comically titled “the destination,” by some real masochists, feels more to me like a practical joke then a zen-buddha lesson in being present; a blur of drinking $9 Chardonnay while trying to stream Lego Batman across the isle and entertain a baby with a series of 10 second activities (tray table, crackers, seatbelt, headphones!).

I started surfing when I was about 15 in Virginia Beach, and my first board was an old funboard from WRV that was about 7’6” and had glass on thrusters and an insane airbrush.

The first Bing I bought was from Bing Surf Shop and it was the Continental model. I think it’s the best noserider in the world and works great for any long, lined up wave. I’ve been riding it for about two years. I also just bought a new Izzy Rider Type II it is amazing! It’s so fast and turns on a dime. This will be the board I ride in surf contests.
